Font
A complete assortment of upper and lowercase characters, numerals, punctuation and other characters.

Continuous Tone
Artwork with dark and light areas, as well as intermediate shades of gray.

Truetype
This font standard combines screen fonts and printer fonts into one file.

PostScript Type One
This font standard has separate files for screen fonts and printer fonts.

Line Copy
High contrast artwork or type.

Rule
A line.

LPI
The resolution of a screen ruling.

Dot Area
This percentage refers to relative dot size, determining how dark or light the screen appears.

Helvetica
This typeface may also be called Helios, Newton, Megaron or Swiss by different manufacturers.

Point
The unit of measure for type size.

There are twelve points in one pica

There are approximately six picas in one inch

How many points in an inch? What is the ppi of most monitors? Is there a connection?

Color photographs prepared for printing in color are called separations

Hairline refers to a rule drawn as thin as the output device can make it.

Paper-colored type in the middle of a photo or printed background is called a reverse
Uncoated or absorbent papers require the screen ruling to be coarser

In typography, the ideal line length is seven to eight words

“Use both upper and lower case letters” is one of the five basic rules for enhancing readability

The best separations come from transparencies

What is the typical range of halftone resolution used in showcase quality brochures? 150 - 300 LPI. see page 36.

High resolution halftones would only be used with which of the following?

Newsprint Cold-press paper Chipboard Coated paper

The resolution of a halftone is measured in lpi

In four color printing, the black plate is used to Restore contrast

Which halftone screen resolution is considered coarse?

Process printing uses four printing plates

Halftone resolution is measured in lines per inch.

% screen ruling is dark and is near to a solid screen tint.
(provide a number value in an increment of five)

Fonts of the same typeface from different manufactureres may vary slightly with regard to fractions, symbols, or even the letterforms themselves.

Serifs make type more readable and reduce eye fatigue.

"Shade" is an alternate term for a screen-tint

Continuous tone art must be converted to halftones before printing on a press.

Enlarging a photo too much reduces its sharpness because it enlarges the grain structure of the film.

The word overprint indicates that one ink color will print on top of another ink color.

It’s desirable for line-art to be dense and uniformly black without fuzzy or broken lines.

Computer monitor resolution is measured in pixels per inch.

A photographic print has less tonal range (dynamic range) than a transparency.

A highlight (or dropout) halftone is often used for one half of a duotone.

A duotone is printed using two plates.

Line art can be printed on a press without converting it to a halftone.

Contrast tends to decrease during printing.

Halftone screens of 300 lines per inch are available.

In a photograph of a face, the halftone dots vary in size.

inclement weather

Nashville State Community College

Inclement Weather Procedures for Faculty

Beginning in January, 2011, NSCC will go into “home school” mode when inclement weather forces a cancellation of on-campus classes. When NSCC cancels classes due to inclement weather, all faculty members who have an on-ground class scheduled during that period of time are responsible for posting an assignment in the course D2L shell that students can access and complete at home. Instructions for posting an assignment are given below.

These assignments constitute a “make-up” class. For this reason, the assignment must:

  • Be substantive and pertinent to the class

  • Require some type of accountability for the student. For example, the student may be required submit the assignment, receive points toward the course grade for the work, etc.

If students do not have access to a computer from home, there must be a provision that allows them to complete the work – e.g., within two days after classes resume. “Home school” mode will not work for all classes. Students in clinicals will, for example, be expected to show up at the site. Lab instructors may need to reschedule labs. In these cases, a faculty member should consult with the Dean or Director about an appropriate option.

Faculty need to instruct students in advance about finding the assignment information when classes are cancelled. The instructor must give specific direction about finding the course assignment and make it clear that the student is responsible for accessing the assignment. If NSCC cancels classes, notice will be posted at www.nscc.edu and will be on local TV and radio stations.

Even when classes are cancelled, the campus remains open. Students who are planning to come to the main campus to complete their assignments in the Learning Center (353-3551), Library (353-3555), or Open Lab (353-3678) should call first to make sure that staff members have been able to make it to campus.

“Home school” mode applies only to situations when the administration cancels classes. An instructor can post an online assignment in lieu of meeting with a class at any other time only with the advance approval of the faculty member’s Dean or Director.

This procedure impacts faculty and students only. Even when classes are cancelled, the college remains open and staff must either report to work or take annual leave.

IMPORTANT TIPS FOR FACULTY AND STUDENT CLASSROOM USE
All classroom and lab computers have been updated to the Windows 7 operating systems and Microsoft Office 2010.
1.0 When an instructor logs into a Classroom Instructor Computer, use the form below:
Example: Instructor Jane Doe will type “administration\doe_j” in the Username field.
Your password is unchanged.
No pull-down domain field will be visible as was the case in Windows XP logon.

2.0 Students will login with the A-number as noted below. The default logon should work normally in the classroom.
3.0 If the student attempts to logon, and gets a message “X“– The username or password is incorrect”, please ask the student to use the “instruction\A12345678” format for username as noted below.
A quick overview of navigating Windows 7 will help in the XP to Windows 7 transition. When you have a moment, please review the video in this link to see Windows 7 desktop information and tips… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jl4xuxMaSyE
Transitioning to Office 2010 should not be difficult; while the look is a bit different, it is very similar to Office 2007. If you want a preview of Office 2010 Word, click this link…Office 2010 Information
STUDENTS:
YOU MAY USE YOUR NSCC STUDENT E MAIL ADDRESS AS YOUR USERNAME/ ID LOGON INTO WINDOWS 7.
You may use your NSCC Student email address as your User Name when logging on to campus computers.
If you use wish to use your “A” number when logging on to campus computers, prefix it with “instruction\” and your “A” number. Please Note: (backslash is “\”, do not use a forward slash” /”)
Examples: “instruction\A12345678”, OR “jsmith1@my.nscc.edu” format for username.
Passwords
NSCC logons still have two passwords. Just remember this …
Your myNSCC web password is only for the myNSCC web portal, everything else that requires a logon uses your six digit PIN.
